Personal profile

Research interests

Dr. Hanne van Ballegooijen is a nutritional-epidemiologist and assistant professor at the VU Medical Center Amsterdam at the department of Nephrology. She has a particular interest in how nutrition and mineral metabolism markers affect cardiovascular disease risk. During her PhD she studied the complexity of vitamin D metabolism and related factors with cardiovascular health. The work has led to a more complete picture on the role of both vitamin D and parathyroid hormone with cardiovascular health, demonstrating that specifically excess parathyroid hormone may adversely impact cardiovascular health. After her PhD, she worked as post-doc at the University of Washington to explore nutritional determinants in relation to cardiovascular health among chronic kidney disease patients. In 2016, she got awarded with a personal grant of the Dutch Kidney Foundation to continue her research on vitamin D and K with vascular calcification in kidney patients. Her ultimate goal is to investigate nutrition and lifestyle determinants in the etiology of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, and connect different disciplines to contribute to lower cardiovascular morbidity.
