Personal profile

Research interests

My research focuses on Patient Engagement and Shared Decision Making, in particular the role of information in these processes. The use of information by patients, including Big Data applications,  is steadily increasing. Yet regardless of any type of data, If Patient Engagement is not sufficient, information provision will not impact patient outcomes or quality of care.  I therefore study how to develop balanced, understandable information for patients that is acted upon.  I also try to unravel the mechanisms through which Patient Engagement eventually impacts outcomes. My research is always multidisciplinary in nature, combining approaches from decision psychology with health services research and industrial design. Adaptation of information to people’s existing beliefs and health literacy/numeracy levels plays a central role in my work.

Research interests

My research is embedded within RISC Amsterdam.
