Personal profile

Research interests

Brain disorders and how they interfere with cognition and behaviour are my main research interests. Huntington's disease, Korsakoff syndrome, other dementias and chronic psychiatric disorders especially in the later stages of the disease have my special research interest. The patients are relatively underresearched and treatment and care for these patients lacks scientific evidence.

Specialisation

As elderly care physician and scientist I try to gather research questions during practice. My main specialisation is Huntington's disease, which is a rare inherited neurodegenerative disease with about 1700 patients in the Netherlands. Phenotypes, cognitive and behavioural, and how to treat and care for patients and their families comprise my day-to-day job. Translating results from research to practice is my challenge. Evidence based medicine for patients with complex brain disorders like Huntington's is my goal
