Hormone replacement therapy and surveillance considerations

Objective: To give an update on the present knowledge of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), its advantages, potential risks and disadvantages, and to give some considerations for surveillance of women on HRT. Methods: An extensive review of the literature was made, including recommendations made by European as well as American workgroups. This paper summarises the findings. Results and conclusion: For many climacteric women, HRT may improve quality of life. Her satisfaction by, and adherence to HRT use should primarily be addressed by giving her the proper and updated information. An individualised patient tailored approach in HRT should prevent unnecessary treatment discontinuation. A minimum in diagnostic interventions may help to reach this goal.
