Abstract
It is good medical practise to discuss patients with complicated medical problems with a different medical specialist to find the best treatment option. Physicians can seek advise through consultancy and patients can ask for a second opinion. The Netherlands Canter Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital is a referral centre for patients with complex oncological problems from the Netherlands and from abroad. In this article we will give some examples of this specific oncological and anesthesiological care. When anesthesiologists in other hospitals are confronted with patients with a rare disease, advice is mostly sought by telephone. We think that specific information about the best medical and anesthesiological treatment for rare diseases which is not yet available in the literature can be made easier when hospitals with referral or tertiary functions make this knowledge available to the public. This information could be made available through the website of the Netherlands Society for Anesthesiology. Complex anesthesiological problems can best be solved after advice from an expert. Finding these expert information should be made more easy.
