Abstract

Volume and pressure parameters are fundamental determinants of ventricular functioning. Derived quantities concern ejection fraction and systolic elastance. From a clinical point of view oxygen consumption is also of interest. We modelled the behavior of the left ventricle on the basis of the experimentally constructed Alternative Starling curve (ASC). Such relation describes the dynamic behavior of the volume regulation for the innervated heart. This information was then applied to the Suga-model for myocardial oxygen consumption. Our results indicate that oxygen consumption can be realistically predicted under a variety of loading and inotropic conditions of the heart.
