Abstract

In the Netherlands nearly one third of the nursing home residents uses antipsychotic drugs, often for a long time. Research data of the adverse effects of the majority of antipsychotics in demented elderly is scarce. The positive effects on behaviour are limited compared with placebo. Nearly all recent studies show a higher mortality within 3 months. Conventional antipsychotics are presumed to be as harmful as atypical antipsychotics. It is important to be more reluctant to prescribe antipsychotics in dementia.
